How to attach cards to your PayPal account

Now that you have applied and got your prepaid card, you will need to load it with cash to start using them. You will create a PayPal account that is if you are not registered. Registering is free.

After logging in, you will browse through your profile where you will add cards. You will fill a simple form with the card details, it’s advisable to have your card at hand since most details you will fill are on the card e.g. expiry dates, card type, verification code. Once all the fields are filled you will click on the submit button. The PayPal systems links to your merchant account and verifies your card and gives you a reply in real time whether your card has been accepted or not.

PayPal will charge a you a refundable one time fee of USD 1.95.You will wait for up to two days and check your card statement for a 4 figure code (this code can be accessed online via you card merchants website).Log in to your PayPal account and you will be prompted to enter the code from your statement. Once the codes match, you’re done and you are now free to transact via PayPal.

By default, when you register on PayPal, your account will be designated individual but you can always change to other accounts e.g. business, if you intend to do high volume transactions using PayPal e.g. running an online store. Account types will vary according to your preference.

How to buy using PayPal?

When you visit an online store that offers PayPal as an payment option you will be prompted to sign in to your PayPal account after completing your shopping, PayPal will deduct the total sum of the products purchased and any other additional charges like shipping and packaging from your card account and sends its in real time to a merchant account.

It’s worth noting that currently that PayPal only allows you to send money but your received funds cannot be withdrawn to a Kenyan account, so will need a service e.g moneybookers to withdraw your money or you can request a cheque from PayPal though a bit costly.
